This small house on a quiet street in Akron, Ohio, was home to Dr. Bob Smith and his wife Anne. It was here that Alcoholics Anonymous, a movement that has changed countless lives, was born in 1935, with Dr. Bob Smith and Bill Wilson as co-founders. This house holds the history of the miracle of recovery that began for Dr. Bob and hundreds of men and women around the world, making it a place of great historical significance.
Dr. Bob’s Home is not just a historical site, but a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization (EIN 34-1461210) dedicated to maintaining, restoring, and preserving the property. It is through the tireless efforts of this organization that visitors, alcoholics and non-alcoholics alike, can experience the atmosphere in which our beloved fellowship was born.

Owned by his grandparents, the Wilson House, a small hotel in East Dorset, Vermont, was home to Bill Wilson, co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous. Bill W. was born there, raised there, and he and Lois are buried in the family graveyard near the Wilson House.
In 1987, the Wilson House was bought, restored, and reopened as a tribute to “Bill W.” A non-profit foundation owns the property, and volunteers serve and operate the hotel. A.A. meetings and weekend retreats are held regularly at Wilson House. There is no advertising to attract guests; nevertheless, people from all over the world find their way to Bill Wilson’s birthplace.

Stepping Stones Foundation is a privately run, tax-exempt, non-profit 501(3)(c) organization (Federal ID # 13-303-1164) that operates, preserves, and saves this National Historic Landmark home and its archives. Stepping Stones offers opportunities to explore Bill and Lois Wilson’s history, legacy, and their beloved home, writing studio, and grounds where they lived and worked from 1941 until their deaths in 1971 and 1988, respectively.
The mission of the Stepping Stones Foundation is to foster public understanding of alcoholism and inspire recovery by preserving and sharing their historic home and archives. The legacy lives on through Stepping Stones, the legacy of Bill Wilson, co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, and Bill’s wife Lois Wilson, co-founder of the Al-Anon Family Groups.
